Boosting Your Privacy and Security While Browsing Online – BPL Central Library
October 17, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeInternet browsing is a daily activity for so many of us — whether we’re searching for jobs, researching for a school paper, or communicating with family located far away. Without even realizing, we risk giving up private information or security affordances just for the sake of convenience. This session is designed to lay the groundwork to teach users about the privacy and security tradeoffs we make when we browse the web, and what tools and practices are available to protect us from threats large and small.
Trainers from Freedom of the Press Foundation will cover:
– The fundamentals of how the internet works
– How using a Virtual Private Network can enhance your privacy and security on public wifi
– What free tools and settings tweaks can strengthen your browser
– The practices and tools made for users who want to get serious about protecting themselves when doing risky research
This session will serve as an introduction to safe browsing online, so participants are encouraged to bring their desktop and mobile devices for hands-on help, time-allowing, at the close of the lecture and Q+A components.
